A short guide to Gift Sets & Boxes
A gift set is a bottle plus something else: two glasses, a miniature or two, or a set of bottles sized to be opened side by side. The packaging carries a real cost, and it is also the reason these appear and disappear through the year. Read on for how to choose one for somebody whose taste you do not know.
What is actually in the box
Most sets fall into three shapes. A bottle with glassware, usually two glasses matched to the category, which gives someone the vessel as well as the drink. A multi-bottle pack, either several full sized bottles or a run of miniatures meant to be tasted against each other. And a single bottle in a presentation tin or box, where the bottle is the same one sold on its own and the packaging is the difference.
Choosing for someone whose taste you do not know
Guessing a preference is the hard way to do this. Match the occasion and the format instead. A set with glassware suits someone who does not already drink that category, because it hands over everything needed to try it rather than assuming a cabinet already has the right glass. A tasting pack of miniatures suits someone still working out what they like, since it spreads the bet across several styles instead of putting it all on one bottle. For someone who already drinks the category, a format they would not buy for themselves beats a style you think they should try.
The South African gifting calendar
Three periods do most of the work here. End of year runs from late November through December, and it carries both personal gifts and corporate ones, which is why sets aimed at offices appear early. Father's Day falls in June in South Africa, on the third Sunday, and pulls hard toward whisky, brandy and gin. Birthdays and weddings sit outside any season and are steadier through the year.
Why does the packaging cost something?
A gift box is designed, printed, die cut and often hand packed, and each of those steps is a cost the plain bottle does not carry. Glassware adds weight and fragility on top of that, which raises what it costs to pack and to ship. None of it is free.
Is the glassware worth having?
It depends who it is for. Someone who already drinks the category probably owns the glass. Someone new to it will use it, and having the right shape changes what they smell and taste.
Why can I not find the set I saw last year?
Gift packaging is usually ordered ahead of the season and produced in staggered runs against that campaign. When the season's packaging is finished, the set is finished, and the same bottle returns to the shelf in its ordinary packaging. Some sets come back the following year with a redesigned box. Many do not come back at all.
