Amarula is a South African cream liqueur. Its producer's own timeline dates a clear spirit distilled from the marula fruit to 1983 and the cream liqueur itself to 1989, when marula spirit was first blended with dairy cream in South Africa. Amarula Raspberry, White Chocolate & African Baobab was awarded a gold medal at the World Liqueur Masters in 2020.
Amarula is made with marula fruit; the marula tree grows wild across parts of sub-Saharan Africa and, the producer says, cannot be cultivated or rushed. Local communities gather the fruit by hand once the elephants have had their share of the harvest. The harvested fruit is fermented, distilled and matured for two years in oak barrels before the spirit is blended with cream; in the original Cream Liqueur that maturation is in French oak.
