The flagship red from Boschendal, one of South Africa’s most historic wine estates, named after Nicolas de Lanoy, the French Huguenot pioneer who helped lay the estate’s foundations in the late 1600s. It’s a full-bodied, dry blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, and each grape has a clear job. Shiraz brings peppery spice, Cabernet and Petit Verdot provide classical structure, Malbec adds colour and ripe dark fruit, and Merlot gives a velvety softness. In the glass you’ll find dark berries, white pepper and a touch of dark chocolate, with oak spice, a cigar-box finish and chalky, well-integrated tannins.
